Intellectual luxury: a California story

In a world saturated with visible logos and short-lived trends, Oliver Peoples was born as a statement of the opposite principle. It is not about showing what you wear, but about understanding what you wear. It is the brand of choice for those who value craftsmanship over showiness, the "quiet luxury" that whispers instead of shouting, born under the golden light of Sunset Boulevard.

"From the very beginning, our philosophy was that glasses shouldn't have a visible logo. The frame itself had to be the signature, recognisable through its design and its details."

1987: The discovery that changed everything

The story starts in 1986, when Larry Leight, a Los Angeles optician with a passion for design, came across a private collection of unused vintage American eyewear, dating from the 1920s to the 1950s. The pieces, untouched in their original wrappings, had a quality and an Art Deco aesthetic that had disappeared from modern production.

Inspired by this find, Leight opened the first Oliver Peoples boutique in West Hollywood in 1987. Instead of following the loud fashion of the 1980s, the brand focused on recreating that intellectual, timeless aesthetic, taking the name that appeared on one of the receipts in the vintage collection he had found: "Oliver Peoples".
